Breathing and Musculoskeletal Health
Dysfunctional breathing is frequently associated with many musculoskeletal problems and can be present in approximately 60% of healthy adults. It can contribute to decreased pain thresholds, impaired balance, and movement problems, all of which adversely affect performance in fitness and rehabilitation.
Diaphragmatic breathing has been used for years as a key concept and tool to improve movement in Functional Movement Systems. This screen allows us to separate those that have dysfunctional breathing from those that simply need to enhance their breathing to improve movement.
Breathing Screening and Assessment
In the Breathing Screen, we can look at the biomechanical, biochemical, and psychophysiological aspects of breath and set a baseline for breathing. This assessment starts with a questionnaire to screen for breathing problems. Next, a hands-on clinical assessment will be performed, which includes breath holds tests to evaluate further for breathing dysfunction. If we discover a dysfunctional breathing pattern that can be improved with exercises, we can use a breathing re-training exercise approach to help that individual to improve their breathing patterns.
